Failure to login to sites after Son put Apple Powerbook onto ASDL modem/LAN

Having returned from overseas our son had connected his
Apple PowerBook to our ASDL LAN/modem and we cannot login
into any site that asks for a password
when I tried to check for windows updates it will not
scan and we get error message
Send error number to Microsoft (0x800C0005
I've reset all the security levels to default and removed
SCANNEL from the registry as suggested in a Microsoft
Suport paper
we are running preinstalled XP on a HP pavillion
any suggestions gratefully received
