failure to connect remote desktop in administration mode

Hi
We have a windows 2003 server, to which my colleague and I both used to
be able to connect using remote desktop in administration mode.

For the last couple of days its been refusing to let me connect - saying
that the maximum number of connections had been reached, even when my
colleague wasn't connected (I just assumed that it had lost the ability
to count :).

Today it won't allow us to connect using remote desktop AT ALL. It gets
as far as the log in screen, we enter user names and passwords, it all
goes grey for a minute or two and then the session closes and goes back
to the remote desktop connection window where you choose your server
name etc. No error message, nothing.

I can remote to our other server with no problems.

We have been experiencing other issues with the network, including a
winlogon.exe error whenever either of us log in directly to the console.
We can however log in to the server and administer it fine.

Can anybody suggest a line of enquiry we could pursue, please?
