Failure to complete printing over TCP/IP on Win XP w/SP2

Meitar M.

Hi all,

I've got a small LAN of four computers. Two are Macs, one is a Windows
ME laptop and the other is a Windows XP Home laptop with SP2 installed.
I've got an old Epson Stylus Color 660 printer connected to an Asante
FriendlyNET 1004AL router (and print server), and everything works just
fine except for one small snag: whenever I print anything from the Win
XP laptop, the printer seems to freeze or hang just before the job
completes, unable to even eject the piece of paper it was printing on.

The result of this problem is that whenever I print anything from the
XP laptop I have to manually reset the printer (turn it off, then on
again) in order to allow any print jobs to continue.

I've looked over my settings time and time again (printer points to
TCP/IP port, correct address, correct queue name ['lp'], protocol is
set to LPR [if set to RAW printing fails]), and everything else on the
network works like a charm.

So what am I missing? What did I overlook or fail to configure properly
on the XP laptop? Any and all advice appreciated.

2 things, When you setup the printer did you use Local Printer, create new
port, standard tcp/ip port, enter the IP or did you choose the network
option?. You can also try changing the driver to the "Epson Stylus Color
ESC/P2" it is built in to XP.

If you print two documents to the printer, does the first one print,
but the second one hangs?

When you installed the printer, did you install it as a Network
Printer, Local Printer and select \\server\printer, or Local Printer
Standard TCP/IP Port. But then maybe all those options are not
available on XP Home. When I installed my printer on my Router, I used
the software that came with the router to install the printer on my XP
systems. However, I do remember having problems very much like you
describe with certain HP networked printers if the desktops thought
they were connecting through a print server. The way around the
problem was to connect the printer to the computer as if it was a
local printer using a standard TCP/IP port.
The problem seemed to be the print driver was not giving EOF command
to flush the buffer so the printer was waiting for more data (hang)

Could you give more details on how to do this please.
