I have updated to sp2 and all works well.
I checked for updates a few weeks later and
found only my video driver was available
which I thought was good so I started the
download and install which worked just fine
until at the end it would say failed. Attempted
3 times. They do list the correct video card.
Error code 0x80246002 I hope the code helps.
Thank you.

Don't know what the code means, but personally I
never download drivers from the windows update
site. I've found I can find more current drivers
from the manufacturers web sites. Plus the few
times I have updated a driver from windows update
its caused me problems.

Do not update drivers from Windows Update. Only update drivers from the
device mftrs.' websites. However, if everything is working well, the
general rule is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Unless you are a
hard-core 3D gamer who needs to squeeze every bit of performance out of
his video card, you can just leave well enough alone.

I'm curious. Since all the MS MVP's seem uniformly to agree that
getting a driver from Windows Update is bad and never to be done
and since the MS MVP's are usually the authority on MS... why does
Windows Update HAVE drivers there?

Thank you
(For a while I had a modem driver showing up in the Critical Update
list on Windows Update. That seemed odd. Even odder, the "date" on
this was over 6 months older than when it appeared on the list. When I
ignored this for a few weeks it then disappeared off the Critical list)

We don't know. Several of us have suggested to MS that they *not* offer
drivers, but apparently they think they should. All I can tell you is
that too many people have had problems installing drivers from WU for
me to think it's a good idea. I have first-hand experience with drivers
from WU. I once updated nic drivers from there and immediately lost my
Internet connection. Rolling back to mftr. drivers fixed that right
away.

MS MVP's are not MS's staff. They help people voluntarily.

For their effort, MS reward them with the MVP title, plus other perks,
like free vacations on 5-star hotel, free escort services, free massages,
drink-till-you-drop vouchers, etc. ;-)

They do??? That's news to all of us MVP's, then. Whatever you're
smoking, pass it around.

I would *not* get video card updates from Windows Update. If it is
offering one, rather go to the makers own site and get *their* latest
version for XP

What seems to happen is that the lab tests that MSoft do, so that they
are happy to 'certify' the drivers actually miss things that hit the
real world. These get reported to the makers, who identify them, and
come out with updates; pretty often if you look at progressing build
numbers at their sites. But they do not go spending the money to get
these versions put through the labs.
