My file server mainboard developed a problem which now
prevents windows from booting.

Is there any way to just swap the hardware AND make
windows load?

It might work, depending on how similar are the new and old
mainboards. If not, new drivers may need to be installed. But
generally, the more dissimilar between the old and new, then
greater the probability of needing a clean re-install.

Comrade,

Yes, you can **IF**, the motherboard and processor are fairly compatible.
I've done this several times and it worked out okay. Don't expect that you
can change from AMD to Intel and think that everything will be just
hunky-dory. I've also had an instance where both mobo's were from the same
mfg (but not exact) and both processors were very similar P4's and it didn't
boot cleanly. Reformat and reload. Try it and see. What do you have to
lose?

Normally, unless the new motherboard is virtually identical to the
old one (same chipset, IDE controllers, etc), you'll most likely need
to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at the
very least (and don't forget to reinstall any service packs and
subsequent hot fixes):
