Failed Attempt to Create & Use an Exclusion Dictionary in MSWord

I and a colleague separately created the exclusion dictionary according to Word Help's and your instructions (see Rich A.'s posting, 2/25/04). In neither case, after closing and restarting Word, would it work. We keep trying to get it to exclude "manger," a frequent typo for "manager." Please help!

Also, is hyphenation similarly customizable? We hyphenate some words differently depending on whether they are being used as nouns or verbs ("proj-ect" vs. "pro-ject").

Thank you
Emily

Hi =?Utf-8?B?RW1pbHkgQg==?=,
I and a colleague separately created the exclusion dictionary according to Word
Help's and your instructions (see Rich A.'s posting, 2/25/04). In neither case,
after closing and restarting Word, would it work. We keep trying to get it to
exclude "manger," a frequent typo for "manager." Please help!I no longer have such old postings archived, and since I work off-line, doing a
Google search isn't the simplest thing for me, either... Also, the instructions do
vary, depending on the version of Word.

So please tell us which version of Word you have, and what steps you followed. Note
that the LOCATION of the *.exc file is critical. And you do need to restart Word, and
sometimes even Windows. Plus, if there's an entry for Tools/Options/File
location/Tools, this can affect whether *.exc is recognized.
Also, is hyphenation similarly customizable? We hyphenate some words differently
depending on whether they are being used as nouns or verbs ("proj-ect" vs.
"pro-ject").No, unfortunately, it's not.

Note: the word.spelling.grammar newsgroup would be a better place to ask these types
of questions.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?RW1pbHkgQi4=?=,
Thank you, Cindy. I'm using Word 2002. I followed the directions in Word help, which
the MVP article mirrored. File locations\Tools has Microsoft Office\Office10. Should I
save the .exc file there or should I change the location in File locations?You can try putting the *.exc file there, but I think it would be better to try deleting
the entry entirely.

I can't recall what the MVP article says, but for Word 2002 you should be putting it in
the same location as your *.dic files, which would by default be under Documents and
Settings/Your login name/Application Data/Microsoft/Proof
