problems with Internet Explorer defaults and installing flash player, Windows
Installer, Search Companion - User Accounts - Help and Support blank,
Installing and launching applications, Set program access and defaults,
filetypes corruption, registry corruption, unknown damage from a spam bot
(iexplorer.exe), scanner "cannot be found" by windows "scanner and camera
wizzard" after i install it, missing dlls , Filmstrip view disabled [win
picture and fax viewer corrupted]
Hi
Ive been corresponding with a few MVPs about a few minor problems which are
starting to get too big, as each problem was addressed by a different person
in a different post so ive amalgamated them here to see all of them. This is
meant for anyone who can surpass the little fixes to see the root of the
issue...
Some problems addressed above are resolved in "Default Browser" in
Internet Explorer 6 General and "Search Companion and IE search no longer
work" in Windows XP General
This is what happened so far
When everything was OK with my Windows XP home SP2 machine I was trying to
get CD copyright keys when I was prompted to install flash, I installed flash
8 and shockwave from Opera 8 recently so i couldnt figure out why IE or
windows "cannot install flash.ocx". Opera 8 is my normal browser but all
defaults are set to microsoft. IE was also prompting me to set itself as the
default browser when it already was. . FIX :I reinstalled windows XP SP2 and
IE is again the default browser
I also tried these remedies:

IE fix application from
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP (Q318378)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q318378

I had trouble with registry permissions when reinstalling XP2 so I reset
registry permissions with a command file built on
subinalc.exe from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...56-d8fe-4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&DisplayLang=en
and the instructiions here
Reset the entire registry permissions to defaults
http://winonline.blogspot.com/2005/11/reset-entire-registry-permissions-to.html

I have problems fixing issues when the User Accounts casually goes blank and
I no longer get administrative rights (neither does the administrator). I ve
also noticed Help And Support, filetypes in folder options, Search Assistant
and Security Centre are blank [FIX:sec centre fixed when i reinstalled XP2] .

Filmstrip view was disabled for no random?!reason[the panel not the option]
maybe because 'click thumbnail +shift'?that function hides the filenames to
see the thumb only...its neat if it doesnt mess stuff up.
FIX:Open Start, Run, type 'regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

When trying to fix IE I looked in filetypes in folder options and I noticed
icofile and .ICO were associated to in icon
(FIXED : "Problem with icon display - heeeeellllp" in Windows XP General).
Other icons replaced the wrong files, IE filetypes wrongly associated.
dat filetype was linked to my creative media player, I tried to fix DAT
file association with Ramesh Srinivasan's Blog: .DAT file association in
Windows XP:
http://winonline.blogspot.com/2005/10/dat-file-association-in-windows-xp_07.html
I belive in Ramesh, hes a good guy and helped me out a lot but i believe the
above was responsible for making my filetype view blank. I have some serious
registry problems and I this was my last alteration, when i try to fix the
little things it makes a bigger problem so i want this post to be for anone
who can see the root,
like when trying to reset registry permissions i found that
HKLM \security\policy\secrets\SAC and
HKLM \security\policy\secrets\SAI
were unable to open, maybe its supposed to be that way but i found a lot of
secured keys that should have been open, two important ones may be .AudioCD
and .DVD as 3 years ago someone tried to install an incompatible cd burning
software (from Roxio) and left
cdralw2k.sys and
cdr4_2k.sys
on the machine in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\. They cannot be removed or
remaned (even*.sys.old)every time the system reboots a balloon saying
"devices or applications disabled..." and there is no solution i found yet.
but it seems it may be interferning with presmissions.
As the finale, when i reinstalled XP it didnt install properly so lots of
Apps dont work , microsoft or not. Norton options and live update, WinMedia
player10, windows installer, and others i forgot or lost interest in listing
Instead of giving much appreciated advice, anyone have a new computer to
donate? i love that you read this far, thanks for being a trooper.

Your problems would keep a workshop full of technicians
gainfully occupied for a whole week. You don't need a new
computer: You need to format your hard disk and do a clean
installation of WinXP.

I FUMBLED ON A SOLUTION!!!

i couldnt find the string
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/classes
well classes was there but empty. SO from the
HKCR/CLSID i copied the key name and went back to classes and right clicked
new-key and ALL the CLSID substrings copied to the location after that.

then [in a user account] start-run
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript
and everything WORKED!
i got back user accounts, windows media player, search companion, help and
support... Im a novice computer user and I beat MVPS who have been working on
this for 6 months!Im sorry I shouldnt be crass it might only be a quick fix ,
Im just really happy I dont have to do a clean install. hope it works for the
rest of you.

as a folow up and addition to my hasteful post above
make sure you back up registry before making changes [right click the key or
'my computer at the top to save all registries and select export, a save to
window will promp you to save to a default location, save there or somewhere
you will remember)

before you copy the CLSID keys to CLASSES make sure the permissions are
properly set (i make a lucky guess but if someone knows the proper
permissions and groups listed please post)
correction
I typed the following commands wrong above this is what they are
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll

i ran the commands from the other user just to be safe. ALL seems to work
but now i get application hangs from COM services only when i try to open com
services tree. I had problems before i copied the CLSID keys but I could open
it. CLSID keys open when clicking on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/classes
but should there be a CLSID folder key on the end of classes?
