Faded Windows Starup Screen

Sometimes, when I start Win XP Home Edition, I reach the Startup screen, but
it is very dim, and the progress bar does not move. It proceeds no further.
My only recourse is to restart the PC. I have tried reformatting and
re-installing, to no avail.

My system has an ASUS A7N8X motherboard with an AMD 2600+ CPU, 1 gb RAM,
ASUS V9540 128 mg video card, go gb Maxtor HD.

Anyone had this problem - any suggestions. Tried resetting video card,
checking connections...etc.
