For some reason when I try to shut down XP it takes
forever!!! Also tends to be very slow booting up. Once
upon a time I found some info on Microsoft site (XP
help?) that walked through how to identify what might be
causing the problem. I think I had to run something like
cmfd & then do a bunch of things. Does anyone know were
to find the info on what to check? Thanks

Look at the Error Reports in Event Viewer and post copies here. Make an
exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID,
Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling
two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure
this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

It was cmd to check the integrity of your windows xp
files. But I don't think thats your problem.

As far as xp slow shutdown, I would run error checking.
Need help? Open help and support and search for "error
checking"

As far as slow bootup, you should run spyware scan Need
help?

If you don't have reliable spyware removal, you can it
it spybot free at

http://www.net-integration.net/index.php?
page=spybotsd#clean

If this is sp2, sp2 startup is influence more by what
application are loaded up,more than sp1 was infulence
what applications is loaded up. Once you run the spybot
then run autorun.exe Need help? You can download autoruns
from :

http://doc.sch130.nsc.ru/www.sysinternals.com/files/autoru
ns.zip
Unzip and then make a shortcut. Then copy shortcut to
start and place in All Programs. Then run autoruns.
It will show you what is in startup similar to
msconfig.exe. only alot more definitive. You can uncheck
a applications. I would look for applications you don't
need at startup. Like for me I have a scanner that loaded
multiple files up even though I don't use it. I unchecked
those boxes and wella it boots up at normal speed. Once
you uncheck boxes , reboot and test your speed. You got
to isolate what application is slow bootup speed. Don't
diable any microsoft startups.
