The probable cause of my problems, besides my mental
state, could be a corrupt shell32.dll file. How can I
extract or get a new file?

Do a search of the harddrive using the search companion and
look for that file. There should be a backup in
c:\windows\system32\dllcache. If it's there copy it over the
one in c:\windows\system32

When you suspect corruption in a system component, put the CD in the
drive, exit the autorun and then Start - Run the line
SFC /SCANNOW
which will check all such files, and retrieve replacements for ones
found to be bad
