Extra instance of Word when double-click on .DOC file.

When I double-click on a Word document in Explorer, Word
first opens a blank document instance then a second
instance with my selected document. Any thoughts on how
to stop the blank instance from opening.

I expect Word to open and display the selected document
only and I know it's possible because that is what
happens on another computer with the same OS and version
of Word.
