External modems cause Windows 2000 to freeze

I can't get an external serial modem to work on this board.

This is the second P4P800-E Deluxe I've tried, I RMA'ed the first one,
I changed ram to an Asus approved module, changed video card and psu,
and I have tried 2 different brands of modems. I installed service
pack 4

The modem installation appears to go OK, but as soon as I click
"query modem" under the "diagnostics" tab, or when I try to connect
to the internet, Windows 2000 immediately locks up and I have to
turn off the power to restart it.

Windows 2000 Professional w/ service pack 4
ASUS P4P800-E DELUXE mainboard
P4 2.8EGHz
1GB Infineon Dual Channel
Enermax 420 watt psu
WD 80 GB hard drive
Nvdia Geforce4 MX440 video card

What brand modems? Have you tried using HyperTerminal
(Accessories/Communication/Hyperterminal)? Just open it up, create a
connection to your port. Try typing in AT<ENTER> (you may not see it on-
screen) and see if you get an OK back. Have you tried different cables?
Are the serial port(s) built into the motherboard backplane, or on a
bracket you have to run cables to?

Supra and Amigo. Both have Conexant chipsets

I typed AT, hit "enter", didn't see any OK

Have you tried different cables? >>

Yes

I'm using the one onboard serial port. There is a connector for
adding another serial port. I'll order a serial port bracket and see
if that port works.

Do you have an internal, on-board modem? If so, you may have to
uninstall it, ie, which should delete or inactivate its drivers. Query
Modem may be conflicting with the internal hardware/software combination.

Just a thought.

Changing the com port settings should accomplish the same goal, but
AFAIK you should to change those on the external modem before you Query
Modem.

Again, just a thought.

Supra and Amigo.

This is the modem, sold by various companies,
mine was called "Amigo" brand at newegg.com,
but it's identical to this one:

56K V.92 Data/Fax/TAM Modem
(Conexant, RS232)
Model# FM 56K EXTERNAL

PnP is disabled in BIOS

I tried it with PnP enabled, same lockup.

I reserved IRQ 4 in the BIOS for legacy device, when I rebooted I got
a "found hardware" for "Conexant Common Diagnostic Server"
in system devices.

I installed CnxtDiag.sys, but Windows STILL locks up
when I click "query modem". The driver is dated 2000

the modem driver is
CnxtSdk.dll.
acfva.sys 0.00.0001.5 Alpha

I can't find any of those files for download.

I bought Windows 2000 Professional because I got a great price. I
thought it would work fine for audio recording, but several people
tell me XP is a much better choice.

Any advice or opinions? I'll be recording mostly solo guitar, won't
need lots of tracks.

Also, my Prescott P4 has Hyper-Threading, will Windows 2000 Pro
have problems with that?

WD 80 GB hard drive IDE
Liteon 52X CD-RW
Apollo Geforce 64MB video card

I'll add an ESI 24/96 sound card and one or 2 more hard drives

I do audio work as well on a Win2K PIII/800Mhz machine with 512
megs of RAM with a basic full duplex Sound Blaster card. Software
is Cool Edit Pro.

I have no problems recording and mixing multiple tracks at 48k 16bit.
I can playback a dozen stereo tracks easily unless I am using real
time effects, but that's probably a limit due to my relatively older
CPU and slow clock speed.

I personally find 48k 16bit to be sufficient to record with although
once recorded I do mixing at 32 bit, then downsample the final mix
to keep the noise floor down. Cool Edit has a great built in noise
reduction algorithm and I've turned out stuff that's CD quality or
better no problem.

Now if only I could get paid for my talent....

I get excellent results from my system, so your's should do even better.
