External Microphone not recognized

New installation of Vista Ultimate (prev XP Pro). The exteranl microphone is
not being recognized. Uninstalled/reinstalled drivers. 'No audio devices are
installed' msg when you right click sound icon.
 
Uninstall driver in device manager, reboot the PC, Vista will automatically
reinstall driver. Also you can search for updated drivers in device manager.
