External HD not showing up in My Computer

My USB 2.0 external hard drive is not appearing under a drive letter in My Computer, though everything else seems correctly configured: XP recognized it when it was first connected, the icon for 'safe removal' is on the task bar and it does appear under 'disk drives' in the Device Manager and is listed as 'working properly'.

Some external drives are not "friendly". I have had one or two that I had
to constantly turn on/off and/or connect/disconnect from USB until it was
found with a drive letter.

My suggestion - buy a better external drive and/or case. It DOES make a
difference.

But, in case it is your computer - have you tried it on another system?

Run Disk Management, partition and format.
