I have an external (USB) hard drive for my notebook.
I prefer to keep it turned off except when I want to
back up data to it, but every time I turn it on, WinXP
starts scanning it to see what's on it, so I have to click
Cancel, then XP brings up another window asking me
what program I want to use on the device. There is no
checkbox on that window to stop XP from asking each
time I turn on the drive. Is there some other way to stop it?

Right-click on the drive letter and select properties, then autoplay. Set
your settings their.
