Properly maintaining it? What are you using to backup your data now?

You should be able to find some excellent deals there. I have several 320GB
external USB and USB/Firewire drives I got for below $160 after shipping
from deals that get posted. Few IOmega, couple of Western Digitals. All
good and reliable.

Windows XP is extremely stable and hardly ever crashes. If you find that it
crashes often, something is seriously wrong with your system. I can't tell
you what it is, since you've given us no information, but you should look
into the possibility of hardware problems or malware infestation.

XP is not really crash prone, unless you installed it incorrectly or
have some very old hardware you expect it to run.
