I have just purchased a new 500gig maxtor basics external hardrive which as
the name states is plug and go. I sent files to it and then I could not
access one folder folder as it said the directory was corrupted. Then it
would not let me access any files and stated it need formatting. So I
formatted to NFTS. Since then everytime I send files to it and after a
reboot it keeps saying I need to formatt it also the size dissappers but it
shows up in the device manager as a 17 gig drive. It only works when I stop
it by using saftely unitall icon and start it again. Can anyone help this
driving me mad. Many Thanks

What kind of device, USB or Firewire. On SP3 already? Intel or AMD?
BIOS up to date? If Intel, have you installed the Chipset Software
Installation utility yet?

Most computers do not have the right chipset drivers installed to make
full use of USB and other related motherboard components work
optimally. You can get the correct drivers here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!

You will want to get the "INF Update Utility - Zip Format (2231KB)"
one. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for your help will let you know soon if this has solved the problem.
Dont know if this could be causing problems with my pc aswell but when I
look in the device manager I have something called other devices then
unknown device with a yellow qustion mark on it. When I right click on it
and go to properties it says the drivers for this device are not installed
(Code 28) . The location of the device is-- on Intel(R) 82801GB/GR (ICH7
Family) LPC Interface Controller - 27B8. Can you tell me what that is as far
as I know the driver has never been installed for it. I dont know what LPC
Interface Controller is.

Thanks.

That yellow bang is why you need the chipset drivers.

Tomato tomato.

"That yellow bang is why you need the chipset drivers."

and...

"That yellow bang is because you need the chipset drivers."

....have completely different meanings.

Unless one's education stopped at the sixth-grade level.
