External hard drive

I have purchased and set up up a Maxtor 3200 external hard drive. Device
manager says it's set up and working properly. I tryed and can copy over a
file to the new drive. I bought this to have the protection of auto file back
up from pc to external hard drive, for file protection in the event of hard
disk failure or file loss. Can anyone help me, or tell me how to set this up
in windows xp. It came with no drivers or instructions other than to say it
is plug and play. Do I need drivers and software, or does xp already have the
required operation facilities? Thanks in antisipation!

You can use NTBackup, the default winxp backup app.
See winxp help, on its use and how to schedule a backup

Automatic backup is something different than simply having an external
drive. There are external drives that come with such software but a
basic external drive doesn't. XP recognizes it, it simply looks like
a drive. You can copy to it but there's nothing automatic.
