External hard drive

I has to reinstall xp and left my external hard drive plugged in while it
reinstalled. Now I am unable to access the hard drive, it is recognised in
device mamager b ut I cant view any of the files on it. it says that there is
something wrong with the partition. Is there anything i can do to sort this
problem out before i end up losin nearly 120gig of stuff. Any advice greatly
appreciated.
 
Yes first go to

Start, Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
Disk Management & see if the Ext. drive is there then you can check it out.

You can learn more about Disk Management in Google.

Have you tried unpluging the Ext. drive then rebooting XP, then shutting
down, then re plugging it in and rebooting XP and let it find it again.
