External hard drive problem

I have an external buslink hard drive which worked fine with XP
But...I had to reinstall XP
Now the PC recognises the use of the USB port but can not read the data o the drive
I cannt format the drive because I dont want to lose the dat
Any help please....!!!

Yes I made sure that I had all the updates that I may require to match the old config.
Alas still no luck.
I tried everything I know short of formatting the drive, which I don't really want to do.
Does the PC create a set of commands for the drive when it is formated telling the PC of its data etc.
Could it be a case of creating a file to tel the PC to recognise the drive as usuable.
Maybe I'm grasping at straws, but this is getting frustrating.
