Back from vacation, Andrew? How lucky we all are. Not. You troll.

The OP does not need a hotfix. This is obviously a hardware problem. It
sounds like the OP has put a usb cable into the laptop and connected it
to an IDE adapter which is then plugged into a regular internal optical
drive - left on the outside of the machine. We also don't know anything
about the laptop's specs.

To the OP: please describe exactly what you bought and the method with
which you are connecting to the laptop, as well as give the laptop
specs. Normally, to use an external cd/dvd-rw drive with a laptop one
would either replace the internal laptop drive OR purchase an external
usb/firewire burner OR separately purchase a burner and put it in a
usb/firewire drive enclosure.

USB ports are a great thing and can run at high speeds but the main problem with them is that for them to run at full speed and be efficient they need around 80% of your computer resources free, so doing anything on your computer and hinder the operation of USB devices, normally you dont see or notice it as Printers still priant as fast and webcams seem to work as they normally do but for a task as demanding and writing a DVD which uses most of your resources wont leave much resources left to transfer and buffer it all to the USB writer.

If you are into writing dvds the i would concider getting a computer that has the internal DVD writer you will get far better results and a lot less coasters.

Try the hot fix, if nothing try turning everything off you can before you write your dvd (even little things take up memory threads which is a resource) and then while writen the DVD dont use the laptop (dont even move the mouse and turn off your screen saver)

The USB to IDE converters are more the use of backing up data on the laptop and writing the music CD now and again.

Thats a good Idea try writing a music CD and see if the music skips in a normal house hold HiFi

This set up is not recommended for long-term use. You need to locate a USB
drive enclosure (aka clam-shell) case which you would use to completely
convert this standard internal DVD drive to a external USB drive.
