external drive no longer recognized

I purchased and installed an external USB/1394 DVD
Recorder and used it for a couple of months without any
problems. Then I detached it to use it on another
computer. When I tried hooking it up to my computer again,
XP would no longer recognize it. I checked the hardware
profiles / device manager, not listed. I tried adding new
hardware, would not recognize it (cd & dvd devides weren't
even listed as options for common devices1?). Other
computers can see this device, but I can't figure out how
to make my XP machine recognize it. I even used the System
restore feature. When I chose a date that I knew the
device was working it told me that it could not restore
the E:/ drive as it was either turned off or removed. (it
was connected but XP refuses to recognize it!)

What do have to do to resolve this issue?

I have a Belkin 1394 hard drive enclosure with a Maxtor Hard Drive in
it and I am having the same problem. It was recognized at first. I
then was copying a large image from the external drive to my computer
and it stopped with an error. Now I can't get my computer to recognize
the drive. I have restarted, unplugged/replugged, scanned for hardware
changes to no avail. I can hook the external drive to another computer
and it is recognized. Bump for help
