Same as using any other external media (or internal for that matter)...

- Copy and delete...
- Move...

Just do *your* stuff though. Documents, pictures, spreadsheets, old email,
text files, etc.

What is your situation with your hard drive that you need to "free up
space"?

From your Desktop, double-click My Computer. Does the new external hard
drive show up there? If it does, continue as per below. If it doesn't,
post back with what external hard drive you have purchased, how you
have it connected, and how you installed it.

Assuming you can see the new drive in My Computer, double-click it to
open it. If the drive window covers your Desktop, make it smaller.
We'll call this window "New Drive". Now double-click your My Documents
icon (I'm assuming your data files are in My Documents). You should now
have two windows open on the Desktop - My Documents and New Drive.

Select the files you want to transfer to New Drive. To select multiple
contiguous files, highlight the first file in the series and then hold
down the Shift key and highlight the last file in the series. All your
desired files will be highlighted. To delete non-contiguous files, hold
down the Ctrl key as you select.

Once files are selected, *right*-click on any of them and drag them to
the New Drive window. When you release the right mouse button you'll
get a context menu. Left click on "Copy". Do *not* click on "Move".
This will copy your data files to New Drive. Once that is done, go back
to the My Documents window and *right*-click again on any of the
still-selected files. Now choose "Delete". Repeat as needed.

HTH,

Malke
