Extending Partitions in XP...is it possible??

I am doing first install of XP Pro on a system with 200
GB hard drive. Initially the OS did not recognize the
drive was greater than 137 GB because I had to install
Windows XP Pro first and the SP1 (which finally supported
48 bit LBA) afterwards. Hence, the original install
established a 137 GB partition. I now wish to grow that
partition to the entirety of the disk (i.e. 200 GB) since
after installing SP1 and the hotfix from MS, I can see
the full 200 GB in device manager as available....but I
now have 63 GB unallocated. Is there a way to do this in
XP with a utility, etc.? Or, must I buy another program
like PowerQuest, Partition Magic to do this????

Open your PC case and find out the brand name of your
harddrive. Go to their website, most such as Maxtor and
Western Digital have partition programs that you can
download free.

if you have a cd writer, burn yourself an sp1 slipstreamed cd, and install
from there

if you are unsure of how to do this, click this link for full instructions
(print them out)

Unless you wish to re-install XP, the best solution is to purchase a
non destructive partition manager. Partition Magic is the most
popular but it's not inexpensive.

My favorite is shareware: BootIt Next Generation

Go to www.terabyteunlimited.com and read up on it before downloading a
try before you buy 30 day full working copy.

Two choices. Either make the other 63 into a separate partition and use
it for data, backup etc, or get third party software to make the whole
disk into one partition. I would not myself use a disk as a single
partition - much less one of that size.

To make a second partition, Control Panel - Admin Tools - Computer
Management, select Disk Management and look lower right for the graphic
of the drive. Right click in Unallocated space, Create Partition

Otherwise Partition Magic 8, or BootIT NG, from http://www.BootitNG.com
($35 shareware - 30 day full functional trial)
