I don't fully understand the use of an extended desktop - when I extend my
desktop on the external monitor all I get is the background picture from my
desktop...can i get anything else on this, am I just being simple?

(mirrored monitors works fine)

No comment regards your intelligence, I don't know you!!!!!
Having extended desktop enable you to have a program on main monitor and
another on No. 2 monitor, you do this by opening a program in main monitor
then place pointer on the top bar of application, hold down left mouse
button, then drag application onto 2nd monitor, some application need to be
reduced in screen size before you move, then once in place, maximise, Just
the reverse to bring it back to main monitor. Also some applications if you
close then when on 2nd monitor, and open again it will appear on the 2nd
screen.
If your PC is capable you can watch TV/DVD on 2nd monitor and have a word
processor on the main monitor.
Again depending on PC capabilities you can have multuple applications open
on both monitors.

Once you have the second desktop opened, you can drag programs over there
and run them once they've been opened. Most programs will "remember" they
were on the other desktop the last time they ran and the next time you run
them they will start out over there.

Try moving your mouse up, down, left and right until you see the cursor on
the second screen. You can adjust how they relate to each other in Display
Properties. Use UltraMon for more features, like a second Taskbar.

Right click on the desktop and choose Personalize the Display Settings. You
can drag the second monitor to the left or right of the main monitor and
independently adjust the resolutions on each monitor. My second monitor is
a widescreen so the resolution needs to be different from Monitor 1 for a
pleasing result.
