Ext. USB drive shows as "Local Disk"?

XP Pro, SP2

I have an external Maxtor OneTouch drive which I had to wipe clean. I
deleted the partition, and created a new one, and formatted as NTFS (as is
my computer).

Now the Maxtor shows up as a "Local Drive," instead of removable (which I
thought it used to show as).

Did I do something wrong? How to get it out of the list of "Local Drives"?
Does it even matter?

Ken, this shouldn't affect your use of this drive unless you want to remove
it without shutting down. I would expect the drive would come with setup
software, if not see Maxtor's website maybe... Being a OneTouch drive I
would reinstall the software.

OK. I'll give that a try.

In the meantime.... what would happen if I remove or plug in without
shutting down? Kaboom?

Well, if it is appearing as a local disk, Windows will have enabled write
caching on the drive, and the Safe Remove facility will not be available when
the drive is plugged in. In other words, not kaboom, but you risk losing
data.
