Exporting registry files

Can registry keys from Windows XP (NTFS) be exported to other versions of
Windows such as Windows 98? I've been able to to export from 98 to XP but if I
try to go the other way I get an error message saying that the file I'm trying
to import is not a valid registry file.

The operating systems have different Revision Registry
editors. Note the Revision stamp at the beginning of the
exported files.

You must use the alternative type when you Export: 'Win9x/NT4
Registration Files' (in the 'Save as type' dropdown), and this saves
the REGEDIT4 format, which the Win98 registry editor can handle.

Note though that the exported material, while it can be imported, may
not be *meaningful* in the 9x context

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 to REGEDIT4

Rather more or there may be unicode in the file. Save as the correct
type in the first place - Win9x/NT4

I took that into consideration, Alex. However, some users have dual-boot,
some users have Win98 networked. Some users edit downloadable regfiles from
XP to use on both.

In this case, I know he said export; however, if he exports a file from XP
to use on Win98, then back to XP, either format works. Was just giving him
the difference in case, he is wanting to modify a file in Win98 from an XP
value, etc that may not be exportable because of a different location and
keys between them. From there, he can create his own.

Instead of typing all of that, I said it in 10 words or less.)
