Exporting/Importing

I want to export my son's email address, email, and calendar to a CD (outlook
2000) so that I can format his computer and then import them into Outlook
2003 and I am not sure exactly how to do that. I believe I would do the
below to export
file menu import/export
export to a file
personal folder file (pst) - this is the part I am not sure about.
Then select personal folders to get all the items I listed above?
Is this correct?

You don't need to export.
Just copy the PST file(s) which will have most of the things in it.

The only thing that this will not take over is:
1. Account Settings
2. E-mails stored in address book as opposed to Contacts folders.

Thank you for your help.
Let me make sure I under what you are saying and what I read in the links
below. Sorry I am not very experienced at this.
Go to
:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
and copy the pst file to a CD.
Then once I format the computer and install outlook 2003 copy that pst file
to :\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

This will copy the contacts, emails in inbox etc, and calendar?
Once i open up outlook 2003 it should be working.

The most important thing however is to copy the CORRECT pst file across.

To check this:
Open Outlook
Display your folder list.
Right click on the top folder - probably called Personal Folders.
Click Properties
Click Advanced
The file that you need to backup is displayed in the box labelled Filename.

If you are using more than one PST then make sure that you copy them all.

Thank you. This is my sons computer and he only uses 1 pst. In my prior
email did I explain it correctly on how to copy?

Correct. After copying the file back to the new system, make sure that
you remove the read-only attribute. Outlook needs the file in write mode

One more question. Earlier I did an export of outlook and the file says
backup and is 5,088 kb and then I just copied it from the place I described
below and that file name is Outlook with 170,529 kb. Not only are the file
names different but the file sizes are different too. I am pretty sure that
I need to use the outlook file? But I am curious as to why different names
and file size when I thought both these methods were copying the same
information.

Do not use Export to backup your PST file. Either just copy it, or use
any external backup tool to create a backup file. Or did I misunderstand?

Hi Pat,

I did what was suggested but now I have two personal folders with inboxes,
sent etc. I sent a test email and the email went to both inboxes. How do I
delete one of the personal folders?

Hello again,

I take that back I have three personal folders. All my emails, calendar etc
is there; however my contacts are not there. Could this be because I have
three personal folders?

Hello All
The issue with personal folders is resolved. Not sure how I did it but it
is fine now.
Now the issue is it did not bring over the contacts. I can manually type
them in because there is not many but it will not let me. When I click on
the address book to add a contact I get this message, "THe address list could
not be displayed. The contacts folder associated with this could not be
opened: it may have been moved or deleted or you do not have permissions.
I treid to add a contact and it said a new entry could not be added. Please
use the contacts module to create this entry. Not sure what this is.
THen I right clicked on an email and added it but I'm not sure where it put
it.
