exporting charts as high resolution images

Paul

I am trying to figure out a way to export excelXP charts
as a high resolution image. I have toyed with the 'save as
webpage' option, however this will only output files in
either *.gif or *.png format and the highest resolution is
120dpi. Is there a way to export charts in a *.jpg or even
better a *.bmp format at 300+ dpi resolution?

JPG will not be better than GIF or PNG. I don't know how you'd export
at a different resolution. I believe the drivers just use the Windows
default settings for this. You could make a very large chart, which is
exported at 72 or 96 dpi (I forget which), then in an image editing
program, adjust this setting to 300 dpi.

This is exactly what I have done in the past with some limited
success.

However, Word and PowerPoint don't seem to hold a higher resolution
when exported to them - not sure why not.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge of imaging apps can shed more
light as to whether you can take a chart out of excel that is, say,
20" by 10" at 72dpi, and shrink it to 10" by 5" at 144 dpi (if my
matchs stack up)?

Thanks for the response Jon,

Using the tools|options|web options|pictures i can alter
the settings up to 120 pixels/inch. There is a selection
of the screen resolution also... I am not sure how this
plays a part. It doesn't appear to matter how large i make
the chart - it appears to export this to the same size
regardless. I find it interesting that XL cannot output
charts at a higher resolution... I mean it is a defacto
standard plotting program - and 120dpi isn't good enough
as output for any image editing software... XL 'should' be
able to export to 300+ dpi natively... Is there a way that
i can forward this idea to MS?

Once again thanks for your response!

In another recent thread (last week?), someone described exporting the
chart as an eps file. I get an error when I try this, so I must not
have the eps filter. Plus you'd need a graphics program that would read
the eps format.

Are you not able to copy the chart as a picture (hold Shift while
selecting Copy Picture from the Edit menu, and use the Picture, not
Bitmap, option), and paste it into the drawing program?

Well i attempted to copy the image using your method (i
had tried this before actually) and it returns a similar
resolution... not high enough for my application. I am
importing these images into Photoshop, so i can import at
any res/size, however i want these to be a decent size at
350 dpi... at the current settings i have a 2cm by 2.5cm
image... not really good enough!
I am interesting in the *.eps format, as this may be a way
to save the contents of the image regardless of the
format... with this rewriting the data at whatever output
resolution is specified!
Please let me know where i can find such information!

If this cannot be done - I suggest that my suggestion
should be forwarded to MS for inclusion in the next
offering of Office!

Thanks again,

Paul

Pasting into Photoshop must override the "As Picture" format, which has
no "resolution", because it is made up of drawing objects, not pixels.

I was unable to make use of the .eps format, and I know next to nothing
about it.

Here's a roundabout way I used for 200 screenshots and charts for a recent
book. I used the Area option of SnagIt screen capture for each shot
(including embedded charts on a sheet) and saved as a bmp file. I opened the
bmp file in Photoshop, changed resolution upwards, maybe did some other
things I don't remember now, and saved from Photoshop as an eps file. Then I
pasted the eps file into Word (because it was my experience that eps was the
only way to avoid having Word recode into a lower resolution). Then I
printed a PostScript file from Word and used Acrobat Distiller to produce a
pdf file from the ps file. And eventually sent the pdf file to the
publisher. Aargh!
