Exploring CDROM/DVDROM

Using XP SP2 and all updates I've encountered the following problem.
When inserting a CDROM the autoplay function no longer works. And
yes, autoplay is turned on. Further, Explorer seems to be cacheing
the contents and Volume Label since ejecting the media (manually or
programmatically) and inserting a different media provides the
identical contents (and Label) when exploring. Additionally, if
installing a program from a multiple set the installation fails when
the 2nd media is inserted but never "seen." I'm really flumuxed,
confused, irritated and just bummed out.

Any ideas/solutions/suggestions will be greatly apperciated.

Things to try, making one change at a time and testing after each
change:

1. Shut down the computer and unplug it. Open the case and swap out the
ribbon cable going from the motherboard to the cd drive with a
known-working cable. Make sure the power supply connector to the drive
is snug - reseat it.

2. If #1 doesn't help, does the drive work properly on a different IDE
connector?

3. If #2 doesn't help, does a different known-working cd drive work on
the cable and same IDE connector as the questionable drive?

4. If not, then you know the issue is with the motherboard. If a
different drive works, take the original cd drive to another computer.
Does the drive work there? If not, the drive is bad and should be
replaced.
