Explorerr.exe = virus?

J

jw

I suddenly get the message every logon that c:\windows\explorerr.exe
can't be found. Assuming this is a virus, has anyone encountered it
and successfully removed it?
If so how?

There are seven Registry entries referring to explorerr.exe. Is a
solution to remove these entries? Change these entries? What?

Thank you

If you get that message then it means your virus checker must already have
deleted the "explorerr.exe" virus
but it is still referenced in startup

The first thing to do is run msconfig and see if it's referenenced there in
the startup tab...
then uncheck it.
Sometimes that's all it takes...but if that does not do the trick then it
will have to be manually deleted from the registry.

BTW: Before you get too far I'd update your virus checker and run a full
scan

That's comforting.

It is not there.

I ran an updated AVG again and it found one occurrence which it
removed. A reboot, though, produced the same danged error.
I find seven Registry references to 'explorerr.exe'. Can I simply
remove the references without destroying the Registry?

Always make a backup of the registry - then it is ok to delete the
references.

OK guys

I removed all references in the Registry to explorerr.exe. The error
window has disappeared. Let's hope it stays that way.

Thanks
