Explorer won't open Internet sites.

I am using Explorer 6 and Windows XP. When I click the Explorer icon my home
page attempts to load and then stops and an error appears -

"Internet Explorer cannot download (my homepage). Internet Explorer was not
able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or
cannot be found."

Behind the error window is a "File Download" window that is attempting to
get file information from the homepage. I am currently accessing the
internet from another computer as I can't get ANY webpages to open - either
from the Internet Explorer icon OR from a hyperlink in an email or other
application.
