Explorer windows don't stay open; programs won't run

Hello~

I'm having an interesting problem with my roommate's
computer. He's running Windows XP Pro. He was having
problems with Windows freezing on him, so I used System
Restore to roll back until Windows would run again.
However, I cannot get Explorer windows to stay open
(Internet Explorer does stay open, though). Every time I
open one (say, 'My Documents'), a few seconds later the
entire desktop disappears, except the background, and
then comes back with the window closed. Trying to run
any application results in the same thing (except, as
mentioned before, Internet Explorer). Any ideas as to
what's going on here, and how I can fix it?
