Explorer text gone white - weird.

Hi,

I have a really strange problem that has cropped up on
all my XP and Win2000 client machines.

Have various file servers and NAS boxes. Users have an
S:\ drive which is mapped to a folder on a NAS box.

For some reason, all clients are now displaying this
mapping (s:\) in explorer using white text! For
example, Open explorer, navigate to S:\ drive, and
choose details view. It is impossible to see the folder
names as they appear to be white on very light grey, and
the details columns are readable, but they are white text
on a green background. Switching to list view, I can
now see the folder names (white text on green sqaure on
white background).

What's even more strange, is that this problem has only
affected the s:\ share. If I map to another folder on
the same nas box then everything is displayed OK. If I
map to the c$ share on the nas box, everything in
explorer is OK, until I drill down to what is the
S:\drive share.....Strange.

It's almost as if explorer is changing the font as a
result of some attribute (eg encrypted or compressed
files) - but the files / folder are neither encrypted or
compressed.

Any ideas? I'm completely stumped on this one.

Hi Martin,

I don't understand this well.

Would you please give me the error screen capture?

1. Press PrnScn key on the keyboard when the error appears
2. Open the MS Paint
3. Press Ctrl-V to paste the picture
4. Save the picture in jpg file type and attach it to the reply post

I will continue to help you to solve the problem.

Hi Steven,

Am only using the browser interface to newsgroups, adn
can't post images with that. Tried to email them to
you, but they were bounced (online.microsoft.com not in
DNS).

Hi Martin,

I got the screen capture.

Since the problem happens on all clients and only happens with the special
share folder, the issue is caused by something wrong on the server. Let's
try the following suggestions.

1. Visit the share with the commond prompt. Delete the desktop.ini if
founded
2. Remove the share on the folder and re-create the share to the folder on
the NAS
3. If this still does not work, create a temp folder. Share the temp
folder. Move all files and folder of the share on the NAS server to a temp
folder. Visit the folder from the clients and see whether this works.

Thanks for your help Steven.

There was a hidden, system, desktop.ini.

I did an attrib -s -h on the file, then renamed it.

This cured the problem.

Thanks again.

Regards.
