Explorer shuts down after picture upload

Problem Description: When I open Explorer, and navigate
to My Pictures subfolder of My Documents, Explorer
closes. Behavior began after I installed Windows update
on July 15. I also installed new Sony camera (PSC-V1) but
did not use supplied drivers and used Windows XP native
drivers to recognize camera. Successfully uploaded
pictures from camera into Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0,
Windows XP update may have been running in background at
the time.

Error message is:

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1221 ModName:
unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

Explorer does not close when navigating through other
directories on hard drive. Was able to copy entire
directory to DVD-R but when files are opened via Explorer
from DVD, problem still occurs.

Tried system restore without success.

I cant help you because I have the same problem. I found
this and IE6 closing on a regular basis after an update
and then a week later there was another update and IE6
fixed but windows explorer still crashed. I looked for
replacements to get me by and found "Litestep" as a
replacement explorer shell and "Enigma Browser" as a
replacment browser and they were both free and better
than the defaults so I am sticking with them.
Enigma can be used as a file and an internet browser at
the same time with tabs for each site and folder, it has
more security filters than IE6,
