Explorer problem

For the past few days I've been getting the following problem with my
Windows XP Home PC. I'll have a folder open (it's happened with
several diff rent ones) and in some other application such as my text
editor or image editor I create a new file in that folder. IOW, I save
to it. But on returning to look at that folder (i.e. restoring it from
its minimised state), the new file is not present. Refreshing makes no
difference. So then I try to close then folder, intending to re-open
it. But it doesn't respond and I have to use Task manager to close it.
All folders and my taskbar items then disappear for a while, i.e.
Explorer closes, and returns to normal operation again. Until the next
time.

Anyone have any suggestions on a likely cause please? FWIW, I reckon
I'm virus-free and on top of standard house-keeping.

Hosted on a PORNO Website, by an unethical person, suspected of pirating
code from MANY others. Why should anyone trust you when the fix you are
posting to is available from Microsoft itself.

Face it, you've screwed yourself by hosting those files on your porno
website that you direct people to for downloads - and we all know how
reputable filthy porno hosting types are.

Fight exposing kids to porn, complain about sites like PCBUTTS1.COM that
create filth and put it on the web for any kid to see: Just take a look
at some of the FILTH he's created and put on his website:
http://forums.speedguide.net/archive/index.php/t-223485.html all exposed
to children (the link I've include does not directly display his filth).
You can find the same information by googling for 'PCBUTTS1' and
'exposed to kids'.

Run CHKDSK C: /f and reboot. Then go to My Computer, Manage, Event
Viewer and look for the WINLOGON report - there should be only minor
inconsistencies and 0 bad sectors. If not then you hard-disk might be
failing, or some HD control problem exists.

Strongly recommend you backup critical data before doing this.

Thanks, appreciate your help, However, I've already done most of the
'routine' stuff, including examining Event Viewer and running CHKDSK.

The only errors/alerts in Event Viewer are the few obscure ones I've
had for maybe a year or so, like Service Control Manager and DCOM.
I've never found any explanation/fix for any of them, and they don't
*appear* to be causing any obvious problems. And of course they
certainly predate this 'folder freezing' issue.

Ran CHKDSK /f and CHKDSK /r recently (and many other 'routine' steps,
such as sfc /scannow, etc). I'm running another CHKDSK /r right now
just in case.

Not exactly sure where to find "the WINLOGON report"?

But I suspect we're looking at something else here. ;-(

Hope you're still around Gaius? I now see that the 'WINLOGON report'
appears as an Event Viewer entry (near the top of the list), directly
after running a CHKDSK. I'm glad I did that as you suggested. Although
I don't know yet whether it affects the issue under discussion, it
gave me a more useful report than I'd seen on previous CHKDSK runs. I
ran it this time using Properties of C: (from My Computer). Can you
get the same feedback when running it from RUN, as I've always done
before?

I was concerned to see that it showed some bad sectors. Here's a paste
of the full details:

---------
Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is System.

A disk check has been scheduled.

Windows will now check the disk.
Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive.
Cleaning up 12 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 12 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 12 unused security descriptors.
CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal...
Usn Journal verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5)...
File data verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying free space (stage 5 of 5)...
Free space verification is complete.

12281660 KB total disk space.
10685411 KB in 88528 files.
34596 KB in 7192 indexes.
5 KB in bad sectors.
238305 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
1323342 KB available on disk.

512 bytes in each allocation unit.
24563321 total allocation units on disk.
2646684 allocation units available on disk.
---------

What do the experts here think about these bad sectors? Could they
have been responsible for the 'folder freezing' issue?

More generally, what's the outlook for this Win XP Home OS drive? Will
CHKDSK have done a reliable 'repair'?

A 5kb bad sector is nothing to worry about. I am beginning to wonder if you
really want your system fixed. I told you what would probably fix that issue
a few weeks ago but you
listened to a troll (Leythos the Stalker) and got too scared to use it.
