Hi all - I've been trying to get my in-laws XP PC going. Cleaned all viruses
and installed Norton 2006 with update - got MS's new spyware and cleaned all
- downloaded all updates and updated to SP 2. One sympton I cannot get rid of
is - when booting, get "loading user profile" comes to a blank desktop with
only background but with generic "Windows Application error failed to
initialize properly". I noticed explorer isn't running. If I start a new
task and try to run explorer from run line, I get same error. If I start a
cmd, go into windows directory and run explorer it works fine.......I'm
stumped! I can't find this issue anywhere - any ideas!
Thanks - Angie

Hello

Seems you may have some corrupted files in your Windows installation
knocking around somewhere, being that you did a virus scan and a spyware scan
already I'll recommend you the following items:

Run a CHKDSK you can do this by reading this document:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx

Also when finished, repair any errors and you can also run the SFC (System
File Checker) to inspect the integrity of the Windows files, this works with
Windows File Protection by default some Windows files are protected so they
cannot be modified by any 3rd party applications.

To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in :

sfc /scannow

This will launch the Windows File Protection service to scan all the
protected files for integrity. You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP
cd so the SFC can copy files from the CD to your hard drive.

Have a peak here..
