Explorer locking up after boot

T

Travis

On my XP Home, Windows Explorer locks up after boot. This happens in
ALL modes, for ALL users on the PC.

I can run Task Manager, and any program from a command prompt, but
nothing new will install (Just attempted to see if it would work).

I don't have a CD for XP (no CD came with the computer).

Attempted System Restore (somehow, there are no restore points before
today)

Attempted boot fixes (incase it was a boot error).

Ran sfc /scannow, and it died.

I have no 'net access on the PC.

Any help would be appreated.

Travis,

Couple of questions-

1) Do you have current antivirus software and is it updated with the latest
DAT file?
2) Have you run Microsoft Update recently and updated all software?
3) What maker/system are you running XP Home on?
4) Are you saying that the window locks up when you boot up, i.e. the
desktop is locked, or that it happens only when you attempt to open Windows
Explorer?

With your answer to the above I might have an easy solution for you.

Please look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer
for Warning and Error Reports over the last 2 days use and post
copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative
Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the
error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using
copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no
further information.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which
appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button
and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a
paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message.
Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

To Mitch

1) I have updated antivirus, and was last updated in Nov. (when the PC
last worked)
2) I rarely run Update. Everytime I have, it seems to mess the PC up
more.
3) Compaq Presiro
4) Explorer itself. Anything on the desktop (all icons), windows
explorer, the start menu, none of the work. I have to run task
manager, and start a new process from that.

To Gerry

I can't get ANTHING on the start menu. If it wasn't for that, I should
have been able to get it working. Then again, when I was studing for
my A+, this wasn't something that came up in the books, or class

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration ( another option from same menu
as Safe Mode ) and then used System Restore
to go back to a date before the problem arose.

As it loads to the desktop, just locks up there, LGC doesn't help
(tried that last night).

That's where I found out that I had no restore points besides on the
20th.

Can you access Event Viewer by typing eventvwr at the command prompt?

Didn't think about trying that. Will do so after class (and picking my
Profs. mind on the subject).
