Explorer Keeps Shutting Down

I have suddenly run into a problem as of late that is causing me great
concern. If I open any application (I've tried 9 to date and the same thing
happens) and any time I attempt to locate a file through the file browser,
once I get to "My Documents", it just closes the window and shuts down the
application. I've run a full virus scan and nothing was discovered. I've
applied all updated (to the best of my knowledge).

Has anyone come across this problem? If I navigate to My Documents via
Windows Explorer normally, nothing happens, but when I do it through another
application, it crashes everytime.

Please help. I really don't want to have to spend the next week reinstalling
Windows and then reinstalling all my applications and testing my environment
to ensure that its working again.

Learn how to use this program to tell you what's happening, not sure
of your level of trouble shooting skills but PM will tell you why this
is happening.

Use the filters, in fact the program that causes Explorer to close and
Explorer should be the only ones being monitored (lots less output to
wade thru)

Thanks for the response. i've installed PM and waded thru the miles of
messages. I filtered it to just a single application that I know the error
happens with, but I don't know what I'm looking for. I see a bunch of "Name
Not Found" entries as well as "No Such File" (when doing a querydirectory for
various extensions), and I also get a bunch of "Fast IO Disallowed".

Aside from that, its just a giant list of "SUCCESS" results. I don't feel
any smarter or any farther ahead after finishing this exercise. So,
apparently my troubleshooting skills are basic. Do you or anyone else have
any other thoughts on how this can be explained or another avenue I can
follow that might make more sense to me?

I'v had alot of success and some failures using PM, as for the missing
files if they are .DLL's they are suspect.

It's too bad your not getting any error messages, it's easier you just
search for Faltrep.dll.

Since this is a recent problem can you correlate it with anything? A recent
windows update, or hardware/software install? If so undo those changes
through add/remove programs or removing the device and drivers through
device manager. Then (or if there were not changes that you know of) try a
system restore to before the problem existed.

Another option is to try a repair install. I would recommend, though, that
you first image the system to an external hard drive using something like
Acronis True Image Home, version 10. That way if the repair install doesn't
work or makes things worse you can restore the current image.

programs and data, but you will have to revisit windows update to get all
the updates.

Thanks. I have imaged my machine (although, I realize it would simply restore
me to the point I'm at now...which is with the problem). This is more a
matter of stubborness really. I know I can simply reinstall XP and
presto...all done. But, I'd like to see what the cause of the problem is. As
for a related install/update - nothing that I know of really...I had been
testing a new piece of software and it worked for well over a week (the last
install) and then I noticed that the browse option in that specific app was
crashing. So, I uninstalled it. Then, I noticed it was occuring in other
apps. It appears to be the only issue.

I've checked the event viewer and the only related msg I'm getting is
something about the DCOM - which I researched and it mentioned something
about the HD AudioTek or something. Here's the EV log:

I'm going to look into the repair option this week - as my comp appears to
be functioning semi-normal (except for the browse thing), I can't waste my
machine as I'm going on vacation and don't have the time this week to rebuild
it.

We had a similar problem, but only on clients where a Hewlett Packard Scanner
was attached.
Installing HP Scanner Drivers, will sometimes automatically install "Scan To
Web"
After uninstalling "Scan To Web", the problem was not there anymore.
It seems, a unconfigured "Scan To Web" causes the problem to browse the tree.
