explorer hang when selecting desktop shortcut properties

I am running XP Pro, SP2 with all fixes applied.
During the test I have disabled the anti-virus (McaFee Enterprise 8).
When I right mouse select certain shortcuts the desktop stops responding.
The CPU is on low percentage use and there is no indication of problem in
the event log. I do not get the 'not responding' error.
The hang eventually goes away (30-45 seconds) and I get the shortcuts menu.
This problem also occurs in IE.
Anyone any idea how I determine what is causing this performance problem and
fix it.

Wesley, thanks for the hints.
The problem I have is that the error occurs for various files on both local
and remote drives.
I checked the extensions of some files and there does not appear the be any
special context menu handlers.
Files effected include .cab, .log, .rtf, .rdp, .reg, .cfg, .iso, .htm, .txt,
..doc, .msc, .xls, .vbs, .zip, .xml but not exclusive to those.
Its ok on .exe, .cmd

Regards, Major.

Major,

See..
Method 2 - Using ShellExView to determine the Context-menu causing the
problem
here...
Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers

Download ShellExView and run it.

Wesley, sorry should have mentioned in my previous response that I did run
ShellExView and there were no red lines for these file types. There were some
pink lines so I disabled all those and rebooted and the problem is stilll
there. I have subsequently renabled all those.
I then ran regedit and checked all the extensions I listed. There is no
common factor and some only have just their base definition with no default
ShellExt.
The problem occurs on local and remote drives so its not network specific.

The PersistentHandler for .txt and .cmd is the same so I cannot explain why
the hang does occur for .txt and not for .cmd

Do you know if there was a 'fix' released in the last 2 months associated
with the default ShellExt?

Regards, Major.

Wesley, Thank you for your help and ideas so far.
Do you or any of your colleagues have any other ideas for further
investigation into the cause of this problem before I initiate a rebuild?
Regards, Major.

Major,

Try disabling Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) |
Set Startup type to Disabled | Click Apply | Hit the Stop button if WIA is
running |
Close Services.

You will probably see one hell of a lot of DCOM errors in the Event Viewer.
I do.

Wes, thanks for staying with me.
WIA was set to Manual. I have set it to Disabled.
The problem still occurs.
Regards, Major.

Beats the heck out of me, Major.

Wes, I am sorry I am being a bother.

I have restarted the PC ins safe mode and the problem appears to not be
there in that right mouse select of txt and a few other files worked ok.

I used regedit and commented out all the run items and rebooted normally but
that did not fix the problem.

Next is the services.

Is there a list of Services I can safely stop?

Regards, Major.

Services is a tough one, Major.

Remote Procedural Call is about the only one I wouldn't disable. Actually I
don't think you can disable it.

Windows Management Instrumentation service is another one that can cause
problems if disabled. If WMI is stopped, most Windows-based software will
not function properly.

Those are the only two that I can think of off the top of head.

Pull the plug on your modem when you test disabling services. You'll end up
disabling your antivirus and firewall.

Use services.msc and not msconfig.exe to disable services. It's possible to
disable some service with msconfig that is vital to booting your machine.
You cannot do that with services.msc.
