Explorer folder list constantly updating when browsing mapped drive

Andrew

Hi there,

I've noticed when viewing a map drive via wnidows explorer, that the
folder list flickers very often. Sometimes every second, sometimes a
bit longer (3 - 10 seconds).

This occurs from XP clients and 2003 servers, but never from 2000
clients or servers.

Is anyone aware of what might be causing this?

The mapped drive is hosted on a Windows 2003 server.

It's like the server is constantly sending smb updates with the folder
listing.

Regards,

Andrew

Hi there; I have one user here, w2000pro on a 2000 server who has this same
flicker/update problem. As mentioned, w2k and w2k server. We were recently
adjoined as a trusted domain to one which does have 2003 servers. All of my
other 60 users do not have this problem. He is on a Dell 505 laptop in a
docking station. I have not found anything on the kb or technet that does
not mention this behaviour with w2k, only xp and with a 2003 server. Thanks,
all.

Thanks, however, I only have a w2000 server here and these articles relate to
a server 2003 hotfix, changing the registry and also pertains only to xp
clients.

You're correct. the registry edit may not apply for Windows 2000. However
there is a note in that link which mentions:

<Q>Excessive flickering can also be caused by antivirus software or some
other rogue third-party software constantly updating the folder or directory
tree on the server that clients are connected to.<Q>

Perhaps that's the case here?
