Would anyone know why explorer.exe trying to connect to the web at login?

Maybe because you have selected "Log on using dial-up
connection" or something like that in the login screen?

explorer.exe is trojan horse. check to see if its in

your system32 folder. Check symantec website for the
virus removal process.
