When I log in, explorer.exe wont start. All I see is the background. When I
press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and start a new "explorer.exe" task, the taskbar
appears for a second and then disappears. What can I do?

This is most often caused by viruses and malware. It is completely
possible to clean a computer without using explorer.exe, but it
requires being comfortable on the command line and running scans, etc.
with tools and updates downloaded from another computer, copied to the
sick computer via command line, and run using Task Manager's New Task.

Before you go that route, here are a few things to try:

1. Can you get into Safe Mode? Does explorer.exe run in Safe Mode? If it
does, create another user account in Safe Mode and see if you can log
into it in Regular Mode.

2. Do you know what the virus/malware status of the computer is? What
are you using for protection (names of programs and versions)?

If the same problem occurs in Safe Mode and in a different user account,
then it would be worth seeing whether the machine is infested. If a new
user account works, then you just need to see what is happening with
your original account.

Here are general malware removal steps:

If you feel you can do this, great. If not, take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA). There is no shame in doing this.

Thank you for replying but I already solved the issue. I did a system
restore to a time that it worked and now its good. Thanks anyway.
