explorer.exe won't shut down on shutdown

Every time I shut down/restart the computer, Windows gives me a message that it is "ending program - explorer.exe", then if I click to end the program, it tells me that "this program is not responding" and I have to End Now and it all shuts down. THEN when I reboot, Windows loads aside from the fact that I have to Restore My Active Desktop EVERY time. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I recently tried to install the newest AIM and every time it gives me this: "aim.exe has generated erros and will by closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program." I stepped back to aim95 and it seemed okay until I tried to install DeadAIM, and I get the same thing every time. it just seems like my computer hates AIM (and anything made by 3COM). Any thoughts on how to fix either thing are apprecitated!
