explorer.exe runtime error

Just after I set up a home network I started to have some strange problems.
The first user (logon) on the desktop can access the internet, but not the
second (on the same desktop computer).

The desktop is running Win xp media center.

If the second user trys to open "MS Explorer" or "Outlook" or "control
panel" or "My Computer" he gets the following error:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error. Program:
C:\Windows\explorer.exe

The second computer on the home network, a laptop running windows xp
professional, operates fine. How can we resolve this issue and retain our
home network?

You've told us what happens, but nothing about the structure of your
network! It sounds like you only have one IP address available, but that is
just a WAG (Wild A**ed Guess).

The easiest way to set up a home network if you have broadband is to use a
consumer-level router - wireless or otherwise - and run the Network Setup
Wizard.

But since I know nothing about your network and how you connect to the
Internet...

We have a wireless router. The desktop is connected to it by wire, the
laptop by wireless. A cable modem supplies ISP to the router.

Then you don't have something set up correctly.

1. Make sure both machines are completely virus/malware-free:

2. Set both machines to get DHCP and DNS automatically. First try connecting
both to the router by ethernet cable. If you can get the Internet (and you
should), fine. I'm assuming that you already set up the router using the
desktop.

3. Then set up the wireless. Make sure whatever wireless adapter you have in
the laptop is properly installed and on. Go into the router's configuration
and change the SSID to something recognizable that isn't the default. Don't
do the encryption yet. The laptop should see the unsecured wireless network
and connect to the Internet. If all is fine, set the highest encryption
your laptop's adapter can handle.

4. Make sure the laptop and the desktop each have unique computer names.
Control Panel>System>Computer Name. Computer names should not be named the
same as any user accounts; i.e., if you have a user account "Tony" don't
name the computer "Tony".

If you need more help, post back with more detail. You still aren't telling
me very much. Refer to the "good post" link I gave you if you are unsure
what to include. Definitely include the result of ipconfig on both machines
by doing:

Start>Run>ipconfig /all [enter]

We're really interested in seeing the IP address of each machine and the
gateway. Don't worry - because you are using a router those will be private
IP addresses and you are safe to give them out since they aren't accessible
from the Internet.
