explorer.exe problem after update

Hello,
I hope someone can help. I am running XP Pro, and after
running the repair for Blaster worm, Updating Anti Virus,
and then performing a Windows update (which added a number
of items beyond the needed patch), I can no longer get
into areas that seem to use explorer.exe. If I right click
on Start, or My Computer etc, the system just indefinitely
hangs without going to the destination.
It appears that the Windows Update itself may have caused
this. Help, I'm knowledgable but not expert.
Thanks,
Jim

.
I would run some maintenance tools, ( disk cleanup,
defragmenter, and system file checker ) For the system
file checker tool, click start, run, then type in
this; "sfc /scannow" with that space after sfc, and it
will ask for your XP CD.
