explorer.exe not responding....

Thanks to those who responded to my previous posting. Having scrubbed this
drive (spybot, adware, MS spyware, disk clean up, defrag), I'm pretty
convinced this drive is clean, but explorer. exe still stops responding very
quickly after loading (about 5seconds) in both normal & safe. No recovery
points were set, so system recovery is out. The only function is being able
to start task manager to log off or restart the system. I can launch a
command mode from taskmgr, but any attempt to launch any other task results
in locked cpu.

Is there any way to reinstall just explorer.exe? Or am I missing something?

If this was my PC then I would do this:
- Save all data files to an independent medium.
- Start a Command Prompt.
- Insert the WinXP CD.
- Type this command:
d:\i386\winnt32.exe (assuming that d: is your CD drive letter)

This will "upgrade" your WinXP installation to WinXP. It will
probably fix your problem. You won't lose any of your current
settings or any of your installed software. Remember to install
Service Pack 2 plus all security updates.
