Try System Restore to an earlier date when things were working and sound.
On how to do system restore follow thiese steps:
1- Click on Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System
Restore.
2- There you can restore your system to say for ex Yesterday on the calender
and follow the instructions on the screen.
HTH.
Please let us know.

Hi Explorer,
1=> Scan for malwares and viruses on your system first to be sure it is
clean, then run this command and see if the explorer.exe
start up again:
sfc /scannow and get your XP CD handy to insert in when asked to do so.

2=>if the above fail try this:

use CTRL+SHIFT+ESC->File->New Task (Run...)->explorer.exe to restart explorer
Read these links to have an idea about what the explorer.exe and how to
start it up:

Error Message When You Start Windows Explorer: Explorer.exe Has Generated
Errors and Will Be Closed by Windows:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319124

Explorer.exe may generate an application error when you close a folder:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;329692

3=> If still no joy try This by opening the Registry editor and delete the
entires between the quotes (" ")..

[+] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image
File Execution Options\ " explorer.exe "

[+] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image
File Execution Options\ " iexplorer.exe "

Once these keys are deleted the desktop and internet explorer should come
back and start up.

4=> Also try Kelly korner and download this fix on line *3*:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Please perform each step and reboot your machine and see if it will work.
HTH.
Please let us know.
Regards,
nass
