explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

This has happened about once a day lately and I hope someone can help. After
it closes and restarts everything is just as it was before except my ATI
systray icon is gone. Maybe the problem is with my videocard, this is an oem
videocard(Sony vaio laptop) and I have all the drivers up to date as far as I
know
My AV program is PCcillin and it is always up to date and I have no virus,
spywre or any of that crap. I will post the event info:Event Type: Error

That can be a tough one.. though just the other day i ran in to this on
my dads computer, what happened to it was SP2 was installing and the
computer got turned off in the middle and then that happened, explorer
crashed on ntdll.dll. Just check to see if system properties says sp2 is
installed on the general tab, if it doesn't check add/remove programs
for sp2 and uninstall it. Other stuff that I've had work is to go in to
internet explorer's options, advanced tab, and uncheck enable 3rd party
browser extensions, or to go to start, run and run sfc /scannow

this latest security service pack has also caused this to occur on one of my
machines when/if I install all 9 of the updates. I cannot install all of
them at this time as a result. I will take a look t my list, but I know for
sure that I could not install the update for IE6. My other machines (XP Pro,
Win 2k, & 1 Win98SE) both took the full available update without a wimper...
go figure.
