explorer.exe error message

Hello, Trying to help a friend with XP on a IBM thinkpad.
At start up XP logo runs but takes a long time
Then error message as to explorer.exe appears
result no start menu but wallpaper will appear as will her installed
screensaver
when screensaver cleared wallpaper appears with a mouse pointer but no icons
no start menu prompt
can you help with this?
 
I will try these items but please clarify run all of them in safe mode?

Well first scan for malwares on that Computer and Viruses try to log in Safe
Mode and run a scan online from one or all those vendors:
http://www.sophos.com
http://www.pandasecurity.com
http://www.trendmicro.com

For malwares download this software:
http://www.safer-networking.org

After doing that and seeing what the scanning will come up with, open a run
command and type these command in:
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 shell32.dll click [OK]
regsvr32 Jscript.dll click [OK]

Also type in : regedit.exe click [OK] and on the Registry Editor locate
this KEY:
[-] HKEY_CLASSE_ROOT\Directory\Background\Shellex\ what here?.

Yes, why, because if there is any thing lurking in the background will not
start in safe mode or if it did start will be limited and you can know what
it is.
